This
third Golden Boy film is a startling departure from the crass sexuality
and frothy, artless screaming that seem to follow Kintaro Oe around.
Rather, this is a surprisingly touching tale of an innocent young girl
being taken advantage of by an evil entrepreneur with Yakuza ties. There
is little in the way of hysterics and woman-chasing, and instead more
emphasis on subtle relationships. There is also some serious violence
in this episode. However, although it may not conform to the blueprints
of other Golden Boy episodes, it is well worth watching, containing
one of the most convincing portrayals of a blossoming, old-fashioned,
sensitive Japanese youth in the anime repertoire. The corrupting thug
is more caricature than character, but works well as an evil foil. Even
considering the serious nature of this episode, it is not without its
brilliant moments. Highlights include the dog-racing scene, and in particularly
the famed "corkscrew kiss".
